This project began with a company’s request of making a gallery with an empty room of a building. Measurement of the inside dimension was 3.4 x 6.1m rectangular, empty room. Designing the space was extremely difficult. Our design goal was to make a contradiction “small, spacious room”, taking request and present condition into consideration. After discussing the theme with the client, we experimentally segmented the small room.
Our image is not simply making the space with heads or tails, or within and without in a complex way, but to coexist two parallel worlds in a small room across time-space, and to create a scene where both worlds could come and go in an instant.
The simple physical distance is lost, and the extreme differences in the brightness of the two worlds transfigure dramatically in isolation and coexistence with the eyes’ light and dark adaptation. The sound and smell from the opening will be sent to an unexpected place.
It inspired our five senses and gave us reality that we had never experienced before, and awoke the possibility to build a new way of location.
