Japanese Fukuoka based architect SHIMOKAWA Toru / stad completed "s-house" in 2007. This house got Bauwelt Prize 2009 "The First House" / Berlin(Deutschland).

The following text is a text by the architect.

"s-house"
The house for family of four adults built on the site of 60 square
meters.
The neighborhood whole area of the s-house used to prosper as a wholesale dealer street,
and the house is built on the land where mother of the owner ran a kimono shop in old days.
As explained this area was wholesale dealer street, the site of the house was slim, and was small with 60 square meters.
Also privacy and security are indispensable for the site of such characteristic place.
Among two walls facing the road, a longer wall of the concrete without the window stands up to create houserooms.
In addition, this wall is effective to intercept the afternoon sun.
The warmth of home overflows to outside from contrastively arranged windows in each floors on another side of wall.
This is to contribute to the making of vigor to the town which is the demand of the owner.
A void with the maple tree which tie the outside and the inside was arranged in the inside of the walls
as same shape as the its site makes people to feel sunlight, wind and seasons, while finding privacy.
At all this planning creates the approach of the inside and the outside each other.
