This is a reconstruction project for a house built by a housing manufacturer near Minoh Station in Osaka Prefecture.
On the north side of the site, there is a large existing retaining wall built during the initial development, and behind it runs a prefectural road connecting Ikeda City and Minoh City from east to west. The south side is a pathway leading to the station, with a lot of foot traffic.
After analyzing the site’s surroundings, it became evident that large-scale development resulted in a series of identical housing plans. At the road level, there are box-shaped retaining wall parking lots, with houses built on top of the retaining walls. Most of these houses have living, dining, and kitchen (LDK) areas on the first floor and private rooms on the second floor. Despite the height differences due to the road gradient, it was found that the neighbors’ living spaces occur at the same level.
Additionally, we discovered that by raising the floor height of the second floor as far as possible while clearing the north slope, we could ensure a view that overlooks Umeda and Tennoji.
In this plan, private rooms are placed on the first floor and the living room is on the second floor. By reversing the living scene from the surrounding area, a rich living environment is ensured by creating a living room with a good view while keeping a physical distance from the hustle and bustle of the surroundings.
The calm living on the first floor, as if living underground, and the open space on the second floor with a view are connected by a gently sloping staircase, mediating the two contrasting spaces.
By tilting the exterior walls outward, an under-eave space is created, with the lower part used as a parking lot. The interior space expands outward, increasing the volume and creating a space that feels larger. At the second-floor level, the slanted exterior walls serve as railings, adjusting the height according to the road gradient to consider the view from the living room when seated. The slanted walls also secure the width of the outdoor living space, maximizing the living space on the second floor.
The roof shape is designed to be lower on the strict northern setback side and open towards the direction with a good view, creating a space with undulations and forming an open-ended space.
By optimizing the geometry of the building based on the surrounding environment and the building program, the site is fully utilized. This rediscovery and reevaluation of the site’s value were realized through the construction of the building. It is not a standout building isolated in the city but rather a building that poses the question of how it should ideally be.
