伝統と技術を通じてシェルターを再構築する
第19回ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ国際建築展の「インテリジェンス。ナチュラル。アーティフィシャル。コレクティブ」というテーマのもと、MADのインスタレーション「チャイニーズ・ペーパー・アンブレラ」は中国館の屋外スペースに展示されています。
このインスタレーションは、伝統的な中国の油紙傘から着想を得ており、主な素材として宣紙（Xuan paper）を使用しています。この紙は、半透明で耐水性を持たせるために、桐油（tung oil）を何度も塗布しています。この構造は、この古代の技術に新たな形とスケールを与え、日差しを遮り雨をしのぐ屋外空間へと変貌させています。
ヴェネツィアの海洋性気候は、昼と夜の間に穏やかな気温の変化をもたらし、天候は予測が難しく、強い日差し、突然の雨、時には強風が交互に現れます。アルセナーレ展示ルートの終点近くに位置する中国館の屋外庭園は、自然に足を止めたくなる場所となっています。来場者は、展示を進む中で、静かに思索したり、休息したり、あるいはただ呼吸するためのひとときへと誘われます。傘の下に足を踏み入れると、まるで親密な野外劇場に入ったかのような感覚になり、来場者は移ろう光や繊細な空気の変化に包み込まれます。来場者は、移ろう光と影の模様を体験するとともに、内側と外側の間にある微妙な温度差も感じ取ります。
チャイニーズ・ペーパー・アンブレラは、周囲の環境に応答するように設計されています。半透明の表面と通気性のある継ぎ目が、周囲の空気や光とのつながりを保ちます。暑く乾燥した日には、構造の上部に組み込まれたミストシステムが作動し、傘の下の空気を冷やして来場者の快適さを高めます。伝統的な桐油の技術と現代のセンシング技術が組み合わされ、温度、湿度、光に適応します。
キャノピーの内部には、MADがOPPLEライティングのスマート・ダイナミック・ライト（SDL）システムを組み込み、天候や自然光の変化に応答するようになっています。光が油を塗った紙の上を移動するにつれて、この傘は陰影と輝きのパヴィリオンとなり、昼と夜のリズムを映し出します。
時が経つにつれて、油紙は自然に黄ばみ、摩耗し、天候や日光の影響でゆっくりと劣化していきます。それが徐々に姿を消していくことは、この構造の儚さを際立たせ、変化する気候に対して建築と自然がいかに思慮深く共存しうるかについて、詩的な省察を促します。
このインスタレーションは、第19回ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ国際建築展の中国館にて、2025年11月23日まで公開されています。

Reimagining Shelter Through Tradition and Technology
At the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, themed “Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective,” MAD’s installation Chinese Paper Umbrella is presented in the outdoor space of the China Pavilion.
Inspired by the traditional Chinese oil paper umbrella, the installation uses Xuan paper as its main material. The paper is coated multiple times with tung oil to make it both translucent and water-resistant. The structure gives new form and scale to this ancient craft, transforming it into an outdoor space that offers shade from the sun and shelter from the rain.
Venice’s maritime climate brings moderate shifts between day and night temperatures, and its weather is often unpredictable, alternating between strong sun, sudden rain, and occasionally strong winds. Located near the end of the Arsenale exhibition route, the China Pavilion’s outdoor garden offers a natural place to pause. As visitors move through the exhibition, they are invited into a moment of quiet reflection, rest, or simply space to breathe.
Stepping beneath the umbrella feels like entering an intimate open-air theatre, where visitors are immersed in shifting light and subtle atmospheric changes. Visitors experience shifting patterns of light and shadow, along with a subtle difference in temperature between inside and out.
The Chinese Paper Umbrella is designed to respond to its environment. The semi translucent surface and breathable seams keep it connected to the surrounding air and light. On hot, dry days, a built-in misting system activates at the top of the structure, cooling the air beneath and enhancing comfort for visitors. Traditional tung oil craftsmanship is combined with modern sensing technology to adapt to temperature, humidity, and light.
Inside the canopy, MAD has integrated OPPLE Lighting’s Smart Dynamic Light (SDL) system, which responds to changes in weather and daylight. As light moves across the oiled paper, the umbrella becomes a pavilion of shadow and glow, reflecting the rhythms of day and night.
Over time, the oil paper will naturally yellow, wear, and slowly degrade with weather and sunlight. Its gradual disappearance underscores the structure’s impermanence and offers a poetic reflection on how architecture and the natural world might coexist in thoughtful response to our changing climate.
The installation is on view at the China Pavilion of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, through November 23, 2025.
