The house is being used as a holiday home. Coming from the chilly North and looking forward to spend some time in the Ticino region one imagines an idyllic life at the lake comprising sunshine, intense thunderstorms, opulent vegetation, boasting colours, Southern scents and jaunty recreation. The building lot is located directly at the shoreline, confined by the public bathing area and the main road passing by five meters above ground.
The Lago Maggiore affects the life at its shore: The adjoining estates are being flooded over and over again, the water level rising up to six meters. Insurance companies are not willing to pay for damages below a certain datum level any more.
Baring these prerequisites in mind, we lifted up the house: It balances on angular architraves and forms a sunshading pergola.
In doing so, the formerly remnant space garden is being enlarged. We use the circumferential rubble walls to lay upon and attach our house. The living area is being finished in lacquered timber cladding. The rooms are experienced from centrally located niches – resembling softly upholstered furniture – towards the perimeter. When all doors and windows stand open, the house becomes a large terrace.
