THE BARRAGAN PRIZE NAMES JUNYA ISHIGAMI ITS INAUGURAL LAUREATE AT LA CUADRA IN COLLABORATION WITH BOTTEGA VENETA
Mexico City, October 9, 2026 – La Cuadra announces the launch of The Barragan Prize, a new annual international architecture award established in collaboration with Bottega Veneta to recognize architects whose work challenges conventions and expands the possibilities of contemporary architecture. Japanese architect Junya Ishigami has been named its inaugural laureate.
The first edition was celebrated at La Cuadra, the historic equestrian estate designed by Luis Barragan in 1968. Ishigami was recognized for his experimental architectural vision, exploring the relationships between structure, scale, landscape, and nature.
The laureate was selected by an international jury comprising Kazuyo Sejima, Marina Abramovic, Winy Maas, Amanda Levete, Benedetta Tagliabue, Juergen Mayer H., Pedro Reyes, and Louise Trotter, alongside the La Cuadra committee.
The Barragan Prize represents a USD 100,000 commitment, comprising a USD 50,000 award for the laureate and USD 50,000 dedicated to a year-long mentorship program supporting emerging architectural talent. Ishigami also received a commemorative medal and will join the jury for future editions.
Inspired by Luis Barragan’s enduring legacy, the prize celebrates independent architectural thinking and practices that redefine the relationship between architecture, nature, and human experience. Through recognition and mentorship, it seeks to foster dialogue between established practitioners and emerging generations.
With its inaugural edition hosted at one of Barragan’s most significant architectural works, The Barragan Prize establishes La Cuadra as an international platform for architectural exchange, experimentation, and the advancement of contemporary architecture.
